Leading 31-28 with six seconds left and facing fourth down from its own end zone, NC State chose to take an intentional safety. Quarterback CJ Bailey rolled around instead of going down, Miles Capers knocked the ball loose, Cayden Daniels recovered it in the end zone, and the extra point made it 35-31.
Munson The plan was to lose two points on purpose. Somehow that was the good version of the plan.
MunsonedWestern Michigan led 12-7 after a Dieter Kelly field goal with 35 seconds left. Bryce Underwood's first Hail Mary was caught out of bounds by Micah Davis as the clock hit zero and the Broncos began celebrating. Officials reviewed it, ruled Davis touched the ball with one second left, put the second back, and Underwood hit JJ Buchanan for a 47-yard touchdown on the replayed final play.
Munson They put one second back on the clock. One. The ticket was a winner for the entire game and lost in a second that didn't exist until they found it.
MunsonedGeorgia Tech led 13-7 after an Aidan Birr field goal with 1:40 left. Julian Lewis hit Charlie Williams for a 20-yard touchdown with 37 seconds remaining to put Colorado ahead. Georgia Tech drove into range on a 42-yard completion, and Boo Carter blocked Birr's 45-yard field goal attempt as time expired.
Munson Favored by a touchdown, up six with a minute and a half left. That's the ticket at its happiest. It never gets happier than that.
MunsonedSanta Clara led 73-70 after Allen Graves hit a three with 2.4 seconds left in regulation of a first-round tournament game. Otega Oweh banked in a shot from near midcourt at the buzzer, and Kentucky won by five in overtime against a 3.5-point spread. The under 157.5 died with it.
Munson Up three with 2.4 seconds left. Then a bank shot from half court. The backboard has never once been on my side either.
MunsonedEast Texas A&M led 23-20 when a leverage penalty on Lamar's tying field goal attempt gave Lamar a fresh set of downs, and Aiden McCown hit Kyndon Fuselier for a five-yard touchdown with three seconds left. Down 27-23 and still covering, the Lions tried to lateral the kickoff back across the field. One pitch went loose, Ronnie Hamrick II scooped it and scored as time expired. No extra point was attempted. Lamar won by ten.
Munson Up 3, then down 4 and still covering, then a kickoff you didn't need to return. Three separate chances to keep the ticket alive. Zero taken.
MunsonedLos Angeles led 26-7 in the third quarter before Philadelphia scored 20 straight to go up 27-26 with 1:48 left. The Rams drove into range for a 44-yard field goal with three seconds remaining. Jordan Davis blocked it, picked it up, and returned it 61 yards for a touchdown as time expired.
Munson A 330-pound man outran your ticket. That's the part I'd sit with.
MunsonedPenn State led 52-0 and was covering a 47.5-point spread with the clock at 0:00. On the final play, Villanova quarterback Tanner Maddocks scrambled and threw across his body to Brandon Binkowski, who made a one-handed catch for an eight-yard touchdown. The margin fell to 46.
Munson Fifty-two to nothing and the wrong team scored last. There is no safe number. I've checked.
MunsonedChicago took its first lead, 15-12, on a Roschon Johnson touchdown run with 25 seconds left. On the final play Jayden Daniels scrambled for about 13 seconds and threw from the Washington 35. The ball was tipped in the end zone and Noah Brown caught it for a 52-yard touchdown with no time remaining.
Munson Thirteen seconds of scrambling and the ball went up. Somewhere in there your ticket had time to say goodbye.
MunsonedBuffalo took a 36-33 lead on a Josh Allen touchdown pass to Gabriel Davis with 13 seconds left. Patrick Mahomes hit Tyreek Hill for 19 and Travis Kelce for 25, Harrison Butker kicked a 49-yard field goal as time expired, and Kansas City won the overtime coin toss and scored on an 8-yard pass to Kelce.

MunsonedDetroit took a 17-16 lead on a Ryan Santoso field goal with 1:04 left. Baltimore converted fourth-and-19 on a 36-yard Lamar Jackson pass to Sammy Watkins, and Justin Tucker's 66-yard field goal hit the crossbar and bounced through as time expired, the longest in NFL history.
Munson Sixty-six yards. It hit the crossbar and went over. The crossbar had a choice.
MunsonedUCF scored 31 straight points to turn a 21-point deficit into a 10-point lead. Pitt faced fourth down near the UCF goal line in the final minute and ran its own Philly Special: receiver Aaron Mathews threw to quarterback Kenny Pickett for the go-ahead touchdown. It ended UCF's long run without a regular-season loss.
Munson Thirty-one straight points and the other team scored on a pass to its own quarterback. You did everything right. That's the problem with everything.
MunsonedNew England led 33-28 after a Stephen Gostkowski field goal with 16 seconds left. On the final play from the Miami 31, Ryan Tannehill hit Kenny Stills, who lateraled to DeVante Parker, who lateraled to Kenyan Drake, who ran the remaining 52 yards for a 69-yard touchdown with no time on the clock.
Munson Three laterals, sixty-nine yards, no time on the clock. The ticket was fine after the first two.
MunsonedTrailing 24-23 with 10 seconds left, Case Keenum threw to Stefon Diggs along the right sideline, Marcus Williams missed the tackle, and Diggs ran in a 61-yard touchdown as time expired. Minnesota then declined the extra point and took a knee, leaving the margin at five.
Munson They didn't even kick the extra point. They didn't need to. You did.
MunsonedAtlanta led 28-3 with 8:36 left in the third quarter of Super Bowl LI. New England scored 25 unanswered points to force the first overtime in Super Bowl history, won the coin toss, and James White scored on a 2-yard run.
Munson Twenty-five to nothing in a half. Somewhere a man cashed out at 28-3 and has never told anyone.
MunsonedNo. 2 Clemson led 42-34 in the fourth quarter at home. Saleem Brightwell's 70-yard interception return set up a James Conner touchdown, Pitt stopped Clemson on fourth down, and Chris Blewitt, who'd had a kick blocked earlier, made a 48-yard field goal with six seconds left. Deshaun Watson threw for an ACC-record 580 yards and lost.
Munson Five hundred and eighty passing yards. Somebody had the over on Watson and the Clemson moneyline and went one for two.
MunsonedLeading 27-24 on fourth down with four seconds left, Oklahoma State's Mason Rudolph threw the ball away and was flagged for intentional grounding as the clock ran out. Officials wrongly awarded Central Michigan an untimed down. Cooper Rush threw a Hail Mary to Jesse Kroll, who lateraled to Corey Willis for the winning touchdown. Both conferences confirmed the error and let the result stand.
Munson The game was over. Then it wasn't. Both conferences agreed it should have been. The ticket was not consulted.
MunsonedDuke took a 27-24 lead on a Thomas Sirk one-yard run and two-point conversion with six seconds left. On the kickoff Miami lateraled eight times and Corn Elder scored from 75 yards as time expired. Officials flagged a block in the back, then rescinded it on review. The ACC later suspended the crew for missing multiple fouls on the play.
Munson Eight laterals and a flag they picked up. The crew got suspended. You did not get a refund.
MunsonedWith the score tied 28-28 and one second put back on the clock after review, Alabama attempted a 57-yard field goal that fell short. Chris Davis caught it in the back of the end zone and returned it 109 yards for a touchdown as time expired.
Munson One second on the clock. That's all he needed. That's all they ever need.
MunsonedGeorgia scored 21 unanswered fourth-quarter points to lead 38-37 with 1:49 left. On fourth-and-18 from its own 27, Nick Marshall threw deep, the ball deflected off two Georgia defenders into the hands of Ricardo Louis, and he scored a 73-yard touchdown with 25 seconds left. The two-point try failed and Auburn won by five.
Munson Fourth and eighteen. The ball bounced off two of your own guys. Sometimes the defense is the bad beat.
MunsonedGreen Bay led 12-7 when Russell Wilson threw a Hail Mary into the end zone on the final play. M.D. Jennings and Golden Tate both came down with the ball, replacement officials ruled simultaneous possession and a Seattle touchdown, and the call stood after review.

MunsonedGame 162. Boston led 3-2 in the ninth, and Jonathan Papelbon struck out the first two Orioles. With two outs and nobody on, Chris Davis doubled, Nolan Reimold doubled him home with two strikes, and Robert Andino's sinking liner fell in front of a sliding Carl Crawford as Reimold scored. About three minutes later Evan Longoria's walk-off homer in Tampa finished the Rays' comeback from 7-0 down and took the wild card.
Munson They went all of September without winning two in a row. On the last night they didn't need two. They needed one strike.
MunsonedTexas took its first lead, 33-32, on a Vondrell McGee touchdown run with 1:29 left. Graham Harrell drove Texas Tech to the Texas 28, where Blake Gideon dropped a would-be interception with eight seconds left. On the next play Harrell hit Michael Crabtree, who broke a tackle at the sideline and scored with one second remaining.
Munson A dropped interception with eight seconds left. It was in his hands. So was your ticket.
MunsonedTied 3-3 with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 15th inning of NLCS Game 5, Robin Ventura hit a Kevin McGlinchy pitch over the right-center field wall. Teammates mobbed him before he reached second base, so he was credited with a single, only one run counted, and the final was 4-3 instead of 7-3.
Munson He hit a grand slam and it counted as a single. The over died of joy.
